Identity

Identity tells a personal narrative within a format designed to not have one. What may seem like an extension of the MTA standards manual is actually an intimate family story that takes place within the transit system.

The project describes the relationship between the common commute and my family’s personal experience of traveling into the city. The transit system is seen as a setting for both mundane and exceptional events.

Each page of the manual contains a story written by a family member in the graphic’s description. The dehumanizing visual design of the standards manual illustrates the prosaic nature of the journey, while simultaneously masking the humanity revealed in the narratives.

Routine is an experimental documentary in which footage of the Staten Island transportation system is overlaid with voiceover from my family who describe their experiences.
